You are in BB...there is a raise in middle position and 2 callers (one of which is the small blind)...you look at Q7o do you call the bet? Why or why not?

Without question I fold 'em up. Even Q7 suited isn't a strong hand statistically to the possibilities a raiser and especially the caller not on the SB probably has.

The raiser has something in the position that he is raising from. The first caller certainly has something better than you. The SB may be going on guts at that point, but is more likely to also have something worth while. When all you can hope for is Q's or 7's on the flop, it would be foolish to invest more in this hand.

I would say give it a shot on the "pot odds" theory if there are a few more callers making the pot worth while to try and catch something on the flop. But three people in just isn't worth it in my book on a statistically poor hand.

Dutchman-

Thanks for your reply. It was exactly what I was looking for.....

I called and here's why:

The way I saw the situation was that when it got to me in the big blind there were 7 bets in the pot (the raiser, 2 callers, plus the big blind) and I needed to put in one bet to see the flop. I do not think there is any hand that is a 7-1 underdog preflop. I haven't bothered to figure it out yet but at worst I was up against AA to my Q7 and I wouldn't think that AA is a 7-1 favorite in that instance. My intuition (based on my fundamental understanding of probabilities/odds) was that I wasn't a 7-1 dog. The pot odds drove me to call and the implied odds were sizable as well.

In the end I got lucky and I flopped a boat but I'm a fairly disciplined player and planned to release the hand if any card higher than a Q flopped without also giiving me trips, four flush, or an open straight.

What is your view of calling in light of the odds the pot was laying?

In thinking about the odds a bit more the real danger in calling the bet preflop would have been if someone was sitting on QQ. Other than that the pot odds were 7-1 and more likely with implied odds something like 9-1 to 11-1.

i am not much on pot odds and such....i do consider such things, but i have to remind you that although your Q-7 is probably not a 7-1 dog against any A-A, you could be even more of a dog against a field of 3 other hands to see the flop..i.e. A-A, K-Q, and 8-8....unless this was a very loose, low ante no-limit game or your play was EXTREMELY SUPERIOR post-flop then the correct play is to fold....i feel saving your money to the times when you have a decided edge is the most profitable play....then again, who the hell am i?....best of luck at the tables!

Birminghambook-

You may be right, it is just tough to look at those bets and not call the one. One day I'll have the discipline to fold.

The real danger with calling a hand like Q7o is making a 2nd best hand. Someone limping in with QJ, or the raiser having AQ, KQs etc.

You are 100% correct....I would have been in quite a pickle if the flop was Q high (without a scary board) and faced aggression. I purchased the registration code for PokerTracker today and confirmed what I thought was one of the largest holes in my game and this situation is somewhat related to it.

Another day, another perspective gained into my "game."
